Climate Action

We are resolute in fighting climate change and work constantly to reduce our carbon footprint with smart solutions and tangible actions. Our updated Climate Strategy encompasses our entire value chain, including our products, employees and own operations – in other words, all aspects of What We Do.

Accelerating our Climate Strategy

2024 was a pivotal year for accelerating our climate work as we finalized our updated Climate Strategy. A key action was our commitment and setting more ambitious targets in alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Through this process, we became one of the first coil coatings companies with SBTi-approved net-zero targets for 2050.

What is the Science Based Targets initiative?

The SBTi is a collaborative effort between the CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature. Its goal is to drive ambitious corporate climate action by encouraging companies to set science-based emissions reduction targets.

As the urgency of climate action grows, we recognize the need for ambitious, science-based targets that drive real change. That is why we are aligning our goals with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which challenges companies to halve emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050. By following this framework, we ensure our Climate Strategy is grounded in the latest science and supports global efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.

Our Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-approved targets are:

  • By 2030: 75% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions (compared to 2019)

  • By 2030: 27.5% absolute reduction in Scope 3 GHG emissions (compared to 2019)

  • By 2050: 90% total GHG emissions reduction across Scopes 1, 2, and 3

  • By 2050: We commit to reach net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain.

We committed to SBTi in 2024, with official near- and long-term targets validation in March 2025. As this report is based on our previous 2030 climate goals, we track data using our 2013 base year, while we transition to our new climate targets. Meanwhile, we continue implementing climate actions to drive progress toward our new targets.

As part of this target-setting process, we have taken a deeper dive into our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, conducting a comprehensive assessment across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions. By gathering detailed data – including smaller emission sources – we now have a clearer, more accurate picture of our full carbon footprint.

How we contribute to climate action

The insight that more than 98% of our total CO2e emissions come from our Scope 3 emissions reinforces the importance to work together with our suppliers and customers on climate action.

As a chemical industry manufacturer, greenhouse gas emissions are produced in our processes at:

  • our own facilities (e.g., cooling, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and the use of various fuels)
  • company-owned vehicles (e.g., company cars and trucks)
  • our production process itself (e.g. VOC emission abatement)

Collaboration is key to reducing emissions across our value chain. As a member of the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI), we work with industry leaders and suppliers to enhance data quality, promote transparency, and accelerate the transition to renewable carbon sources. In addition, our partnerships with the European Coil Coating Association (ECCA), suppliers, and customers help us drive meaningful change.

To support informed decision-making in improving the sustainability performance of our products, we have developed a carbon footprint tool that integrates our raw material carbon footprint into our global systems. This tool enables us to analyze and manage products and raw materials footprint data.

Key levers for reducing Scope 3 emissions

Reducing emissions across our value chain requires a combination of innovative technologies and more sustainable material choices. Our key focus areas include:

Renewable raw materials – Increasing the use of bio-based and recycled content to reduce fossil carbon dependency.

Energy-efficient products – Expanding solutions like UV/EB coatings, which significantly reduce energy consumption for our customers during curing. We are also developing low-Peak Metal Temperature (PMT) technologies that enable curing at lower temperatures, further cutting emissions.

Renewable energy integration – Encouraging the adoption of renewable energy sources throughout the value chain, from raw material production to application.

High solids coatings – Reducing solvent use and CO2 emissions by utilizing coatings with a higher solid content, which minimizes the need for solvents and decreases volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

By combining collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and targeted levers, we are strengthening our commitment to reducing emissions and accelerating the shift toward a more sustainable coatings industry.

** From 2024 onward, VOC emissions are excluded from Scope 1 to align with GHG Protocol and the SBTi guidance. Previous years (2013–2023) included VOCs, leading to a lower reported Scope 1 footprint in 2024.

Committing to the SBTi reinforces our strategy to follow the latest climate science, commit to net-zero emissions and rapidly reduce our CO2e in the near-term. The journey is anything but straightforward, but we are making progress. An open and innovative mindset, combined with an ambitious partnership approach, will be essential to secure the transformations needed in the value chain – and ultimately the long-term sustainability of our industry.

Our policies and commitments

Our Sustainability Policy demonstrates our commitment to a holistic approach to reach our targets. We use the GHG Protocol, an international standard developed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, to quantify our global emissions – direct GHG emissions (Scope 1), electricity and district heating (Scope 2), and other indirect GHG emissions (Scope 3) – and to monitor, analyze and present them to our stakeholders.

The implementation of Lindéngruppen’s Value Creation Model underlines our commitment to decarbonization, as the environmental part of the model consists of quantifying the financial impact of our emissions. Six of our sites, including our largest site in France, are certified to the ISO 50001 energy management system. We are working to certify more sites and implement energy efficiency programs.

In addition, all Beckers Group sites require environmental permits for all parts of their operations such as manufacturing, storage, waste management, air and water emissions. We abide by local permits and all sites are audited on a regular basis, with corrective action taken in the instance of non-compliance.
